6 Condition: type 2
If someone tried to blackmail me I would tell the police - Если бы кто-то пытался шантажировать меня, я непременно сообщил бы в полицию.1) Глагол употребляется в прошедшем времени (чаще всего Past simple); в главном предложении употребляется конструкция would + bare infinitive. Modals in condition)., what would you do? Subjunctive). В выражении if I were you возможно только were.It would be a very disastrous thing for you if I were / was caught.
I wouldn't say anything about it if I were you.
Вместо глагола в прошедшем времени в придаточном предложении может употребляться конструкция was / were + to-infinitive (см. be to, 4). Inversion in condition). What would we do if I were to lose my job?
